Il Nuovo Postiglione - Jimenez Extends Lead Over Anderson in Richmond Mayoral Race

Contra Costa County released updated election results on Friday showing Claudia Jimenez with 54.3 percent of the votes cast, increasing her lead over Ahmad Anderson to 2,203 votes. The gap between the two candidates has widened to 8.6 percentage points as officials continue to count ballots in the race for Richmond mayor.

With 25,563 votes tallied so far, Jimenez appears poised to assume control of a city council that faces immediate decisions on public safety employee contracts, police surveillance technology, and the allocation of funds from the $550 million Chevron settlement. Of that total settlement amount, $100 million has already been received by the city.

Jimenez confirmed her growing advantage in a phone interview shortly after the numbers were released at 3:30 p.m. She expressed satisfaction with the current tally and confidence that her lead would continue to expand as remaining votes are processed.

"It seems that my lead has grown, and we are feeling confident that it will go up a little more," Jimenez said. "There are still some votes to be counted but not enough to change the results."

Jimenez also used the opportunity to thank her supporters as well as those who voted for other candidates, emphasizing her commitment to representing the entire city. She stated she is dedicated to serving every resident of Richmond and working collaboratively to improve the community.

It remains unclear whether Anderson will concede defeat at this stage. On election night, Anderson thanked the people of Richmond and the broader community for their engagement, citing debates organized by the League of Women Voters and Richmondside, as well as direct communication from voters across the political spectrum. He highlighted the diversity of the city as a source of pride.

Jimenez’s victory would mark a historic shift in Richmond’s political landscape. She won the Richmond Progressive Alliance’s endorsement over incumbent Mayor Eduardo Martinez in April and would become the first woman and first immigrant to hold the office. Her win continues the dominance of progressive candidates in the city’s recent elections.

The runoff followed Richmond’s first-ever primary election last June, where Jimenez finished first with 38 percent of the vote and Anderson came in second with 28 percent. Citywide turnout for this general election was higher than the primary, with 25,563 votes cast compared to 21,674 during the initial phase. Richmond has a total of 59,820 registered voters.

Historical data from Contra Costa County election records shows that mayoral ballot counts in previous years were 23,669 in 2010, 19,448 in 2014, 29,168 in 2018, and 27,919 in 2022.

Jimenez’s campaign platform focused on maintaining holistic approaches to public safety and facilitating a just transition away from reliance on Chevron revenue, which currently accounts for more than a quarter of the city’s tax base. She indicated that her first priority as mayor would be working with the community to determine how to spend the Chevron settlement funds.

Beyond the mayoral race, the outcome has implications for District 6 on the city council. If the current council agrees on who to appoint as Jimenez’s successor, it will likely ensure that the Richmond Progressive Alliance maintains its control over policy decisions. If the council cannot reach an agreement, two special elections—a primary and a runoff—will be held.

The council has 60 days to appoint a successor, who would serve until the next election. If no appointment is made, a special election will occur between 126 and 140 days later. In that race, any candidate winning an outright majority takes the seat; if no majority is achieved, a runoff between the top two vote-getters will follow nine weeks later.

Jimenez emphasized her desire for unity regardless of the final outcome, stating that she hopes the city can come together to have difficult conversations about its future. She believes that all residents want positive outcomes for Richmond and expressed gratitude to those who spent time campaigning on her behalf.
